Congressional Black Caucus: Trump Should Be Impeached for ‘Legitimizing Bigotry’

While Americans are celebrating bigger paychecks thanks to historic tax reform and corporations are announcing huge new investments and job creation, some members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) are advancing their plan to impeach President Donald Trump.

CBC member Rep. Al Green’s (D-TX) articles of impeachment are based on what he and others in the caucus say are the remarks Trump has made on everything from Barack Obama’s birthplace to football players.

“The articles of impeachment put forth by Green don’t allege Trump has committed a crime; instead, they assert that Trump has “brought the high office of president of the United States in contempt, ridicule, disgrace, and disrepute” and “has sown discord among the people of the United States,” the Hill reported.

The articles of impeachment cite Trump’s alleged remarks about “shithole countries,” his comments about the NFL “take a knee” protests during the National Anthem, and his opinion on protesters and counter-protesters over the removal of a Confederate monument in Charlottesville, Virginia last summer.

“Green argued that Trump is “legitimizing bigotry” by “aggravating such controversies,” the Hill reported

Just under two-thirds of the 48-member CBC has backed impeachment, including Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.), the third-ranking House Democrat, who protested with other anti-Trump lawmakers at the State of the Union event on Tuesday by wearing African shawls, the Hill reported.

“We thought that it was necessary for us to demonstrate, as members of the Congress, our displeasure with the president,” Clyburn said.

Others in the CBC who back impeachment include Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) and Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL).

“Nearly all of the (66) Democrats on the record in support of impeachment represent deep-blue districts where their constituents want their lawmakers to show resistance to Trump,” the Hill reported.

Green’s efforts to impeach the president have been ongoing. In November he took to the House floor to promise an impeachment vote before Christmas.

“I now announce that before Christmas, there will be a vote on the ‘Chief Inciter’ of racism, bigotry, hatred, xenophobia, sexism, ethnocentrism,” Congressman Al Green said on the House floor. “There will be a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, Mr. Speaker, on the impeachment of the president.”

Green devotes an entire page on his official Congressional website featuring his speeches, news articles, and videos dating back to January 2017 to this campaign against President Trump.
